Whether you’re a passionate birdwatcher, an avid hiker, or just someone who enjoys spending time outside, Ocala offers plenty of opportunities to connect with nature. From the forests and lakes to the wetlands and springs, the diversity of wildlife here is impressive.

In this guide, we’ll explore the animals and plants you’ll encounter around town, and share some top tips on where to spot them.

Ocala’s Diverse Ecosystem: A Snapshot

Ocala, Florida is located at the intersection of some of the state’s most diverse ecosystems, creating a perfect environment for a wide range of species. The area’s unique combination of wetlands, forests, and freshwater springs allows a variety of plants and animals to thrive.

The Ocala National Forest, one of the largest national forests in the southeastern U.S., is a prime example of this biodiversity. It offers everything from swampy lowlands to lush pine forests. It’s no surprise that it recently made National Geographic’s “Best of the World” List for 2025.

Birdwatching in Ocala: A Paradise for Feathered Friends

Ocala is a fantastic destination for birdwatching – whether you’re an experienced birdwatcher or just a beginner, you’ll find plenty of feathered friends to admire here.

Top bird species to spot:

  • Pileated Woodpecker: These large, striking woodpeckers with red crests are a favorite for birdwatchers

  • Red-shouldered Hawk: A common raptor in the area, this bird is known for its loud call and distinct markings

  • Sandhill Crane: These large, graceful birds are often spotted in open fields or near wetlands

  • Eastern Meadowlark: With their bright yellow bellies and beautiful song, these birds are a treat to spot in grassy areas

One of our favorite spots to catch a glimpse of these beauties is the Ocala National Forest. Boasting miles of trails and a variety of habitats, this forest is ideal for spotting woodpeckers, hawks, and more.

Another option that won’t disappoint? Silver Springs State Park. This park’s proximity to water makes it a great spot for birdwatching, especially for waterfowl and waders. When in doubt, give Marion County Nature Trails a try. These trails are perfect for seeing migratory birds, especially in the spring and fall!

New to birdwatching? Don’t worry, we’ve got tips! Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to spot birds as they’re most active. Don’t forget to bring binoculars (or at least a camera with a good zoom lens) for the best experience. And, it probably goes without saying, but wear comfortable shoes along with light, neutral clothing to blend into your surroundings and avoid disturbing the wildlife.

Wildlife in Ocala’s Forests: Mammals, Reptiles, and More

Beyond the birds, Ocala is home to a variety of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. The forests and wetlands surrounding the town provide a haven for these creatures, and with a bit of luck, you’ll encounter some of them during your many outdoor adventures.

Common mammals to spot:

  • Foxes: The red fox, with its bushy tail and bright fur, can sometimes be seen darting through the underbrush

  • Wild Turkeys: These large birds can often be found in forested areas and open fields, especially in the cooler months

Reptiles and amphibians:

  • Gopher Tortoise: A Florida native, these slow-moving tortoises are frequently seen in dry, sandy areas of the Ocala National Forest

In addition to its aforementioned opportunities for birdwatching, Ocala National Forest is also a great place to find these critters. Head to the forest’s trails or campsites for the best chances to see deer, raccoons, and foxes. Silver Springs State Park also offers a chance to enjoy aquatic life in the springs. Places like the Marion County Wildlife Management Area are excellent for seeing larger mammals like deer and wild turkeys.

Aquatic Life: Lakes and Springs as Wildlife Hotspots

Ocala’s lakes and springs are teeming with life, both in and around the water. Kayaking, fishing, or even enjoying a peaceful stroll along the shore, these aquatic environments offer plenty of opportunities to spot unique species.
